PROJECT

In 2024 Volkswagen released a car model in China, the ID.Unyx. The project was based on the touch screens for this car, which has an important focus on human-machine interface (HMI) and relies on an AI-powered 3D avatar customizable on its appearance and voice in the aim of giving it an advantage on the market and adjusting to the trends and desires of its public.

DESIGN TASK & TEAM

We were a reduced creative team of based in Germany, working simultaneously with other companies and making joint decisions to modernize the interface while preserving the brand’s essence and existing design language.

The team leader and the secondary lead maintained direct communication with the client and the collaborating designers. There were 3 senior UX designers as well, highly experienced in interface design and proficient in prototyping tools. Additionally, there were few junior designers, including myself, who continuously learned and growed within the team.

My role specifically involved redesigning elements to align with the new visual direction we were developing. This included refining existing components, creating improved versions, and introducing innovative on our hero screens. Beyond optimizing interfaces, I was also responsible for testing prototypes on the sample vehicles available at the center.

WORK PROCESS

Typically, each team member would focus on a specific section to ensure full attention to detail. However, maintaining and updating the Component Library, Style Guides, and Design Sheets was a shared responsibility for which constant communication was required at all times. Once presented our tasks, internal feedback was provided. If the proposals were accepted, they would be escalated to the Design board for additionql feedback prior final submission. If further iterations were required, I would refine the design and restart the review process.

As my full time responsibility was to ensure that the style guide and component sheets were kept updated, along with the Team's Libraries. On my daily workflow I was assigned to various sections of the project, with particular focus on tasks for the Navigation and Calling Systems, and the Search flow. Another of my foundamental contribution to the team was testing the prototypes.

CHALLENGES

  • Project for a foreign culture in different language

  • Testing limitations

  • Slow decision making

  • Cross-company project

OUTCOME

  • Functional prototypes to be tested on cars's interfaces

  • Tasks for Navigation, Call and Search sections

  • Updated Component and Design Libraries

FINAL DESIGN

FINAL REFLECTION

Working on the UX/UI design for a major automotive brand required a strategic and iterative design approach. I collaborated closely with product and design teams, facilitating design handoffs, prototyping interactive flows, and maintaining a user-first approach to decision-making.

I improved at identifying user needs and at elevating the user-experience of a well-established design ecosystem, while proposing innovative solutions in the form of interaction patterns, microinteractions, and UI components that enhanced user engagement.
